Newbury and Thatcham
Give Newbury one full day plus a night: museum and canal in town, castle and racecourse outside. Thatcham is a base, not a sight.
Newbury is a market town in west Berkshire with a compact, walkable centre, a racecourse a mile east and a ruined castle a mile north. Thatcham sits three miles east and runs into it with no visible boundary; it is where people sleep and commute from, not where they sightsee. Most visitors pass through on the London to Exeter rail line, so the useful question is whether to break the journey. One night is enough for the town; two if you add Highclere Castle or the racecourse.

Get around
Central Newbury is walkable end to end in about 20 minutes. Town buses run hourly or better by day between Newbury and Thatcham, with thin evening and Sunday service. Beyond the towns, buses drop to a few a day and often nothing on Sundays, so a car or a bike is the practical way to reach the villages, the canal and the castles.
