Newark, Delaware
Newark
Give Newark one night, or a half-day stop between Philadelphia and Baltimore: Main Street, the university Green and White Clay Creek, then move on.
Newark is a college town of about 31,000 people in northern Delaware, built around the University of Delaware and a walkable Main Street. It is not a sightseeing destination: there is no big museum district and no waterfront. Its value is as a cheap, quiet base on the I-95 corridor between Philadelphia (about 1 h by car) and Baltimore (about 1 h 15 min), with SEPTA rail to Wilmington and Philadelphia, and White Clay Creek State Park for walking and cycling. Most travellers spend one night, or stop for lunch and the campus on the way through.

Etiquette, safety and scams

- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics

Scams and watch-outs
- SEPTA service to Newark station is weekday peak-only; check times before planning a rail arrival or departure.
- Parking meters run until 1AM and parking is banned 2AM–6AM at metered spaces.
- Do not cycle on the sidewalk; use the marked lanes and the James F. Hall Bike Trail.
- University move-in, graduation and football weekends fill every hotel room in town — book weeks ahead.
- Fishing is not permitted at the Newark Reservoir.
Newark is a low-risk college town; the real issues are late-night Main Street drinking, unlit bike and pedestrian crossings after dark, and ice on pavements in winter. Standard US city precautions apply.
