How many days do I need in New Zealand?
Seven days for one island loop, ten for the Southern Alps and Fiordland, fourteen for both islands one way. Keep driving to 3–4 hours a day and add one weather day per week for Milford and the Tongariro Crossing.
Do I need to book the ferry and Milford cruises ahead?
Yes in summer. Cook Strait ferry space and Milford Sound cruises sell out, and Great Walks huts, including the Milford Track, fill fast. Book weeks or months ahead for December to February.
Can I drive both islands in ten days?
You can, but it usually fails: too much time in the car and on the ferry. Pick one island for ten days, or take two weeks and drive one way with flights at each end.
