Quick answer

Stay in Manhattan if this is your first visit and you want the museums, Broadway and Central Park within a short walk or one subway ride. Midtown puts you closest to Times Square, the Empire State Building and the main rail hub; the Upper West Side is quieter, greener and still fast to reach everything.

Pick Lower Manhattan (Financial District, Tribeca, SoHo) if you care about history, the Statue of Liberty ferries and the Brooklyn Bridge walk. Pick Brooklyn (Williamsburg, Downtown Brooklyn, Park Slope) for lower prices, better food streets and a 10–20 minute subway ride into Manhattan. Pick Long Island City in Queens if you want the shortest trip to and from JFK and LaGuardia and a skyline view for less money.

What would change it: a work trip near a specific office, a concert or game at a stadium, or a family visit to a particular borough. In those cases stay within walking distance of that address and accept the longer rides elsewhere.

Choosing an area

New York is a grid of neighborhoods, each with its own subway lines, noise level and price. The subway runs 24 hours, so almost anywhere with a station within a few minutes' walk works; what changes is how many transfers you make and how late you feel comfortable walking home.

For a short first trip, weight three things: distance to the sights you booked, the number of subway lines at the nearest station, and whether the block feels busy after dark. Midtown scores on the first two and loses on quiet. The Upper West Side and Brooklyn's brownstone streets score on the third.

Costs

New York is one of the most expensive hotel markets in the United States. A clean mid-range double in Manhattan commonly runs US$250–450 a night in 2026, and a four-star room in Midtown or SoHo can pass US$500. Brooklyn and Queens are usually 20–40% cheaper for a similar standard, and the trade is a longer ride, not a worse room.

Watch the extras. New York City hotel room occupancy tax and a per-night city fee add roughly 14–15% on top of the quoted rate, and many hotels charge a separate resort or facility fee that is not in the headline price. Breakfast is often not included. Tipping follows US norms: 18–22% at sit-down restaurants, US$1–2 a drink.

Ways to cut the bill: travel Sunday to Thursday outside holiday weeks, book a refundable rate early and re-check it, stay in Long Island City or Downtown Brooklyn, or take a hostel bed or a room with a shared bathroom. Whole-apartment short-term rentals are tightly restricted in the city, so most visitors book hotels or licensed guest rooms.

  • Book early for December, Thanksgiving week and marathon weekend; those dates sell out and price up.
  • Compare the total with tax and fees, not the headline rate.
  • A room near two or more subway lines saves taxi money later.

Tips

Choose the neighborhood by your first and last day. If you land at JFK late, Long Island City or Downtown Brooklyn gets you to bed faster. If you leave on an early train from Penn Station or Moynihan, Midtown removes the morning stress.

Check the walk from the station to the door, not just the map distance: a 6-minute walk with luggage in winter feels longer. Confirm the hotel has a lift, since some older buildings do not. Ask about street noise if the room faces an avenue, and request a higher floor.

For a 4–5 night first trip, one base is enough; moving hotels costs half a day. If you split the stay, do Manhattan first and Brooklyn second, or the reverse, so you are not crossing the river with bags on your last morning.

Questions people ask

Which area is best to stay in New York City?

For a first trip, Midtown or the Upper West Side: central, well connected by subway and close to the main sights. Lower Manhattan suits history and ferries, Brooklyn and Long Island City suit lower prices and food.

How much does a hotel cost in New York City?

A mid-range double in Manhattan is roughly US$250–450 a night in 2026 before tax and fees; Brooklyn and Queens run about 20–40% less. December and holiday weekends cost the most.

Where should first-time visitors stay in New York City?

Midtown for the shortest walks to Broadway, Central Park and the rail stations, or the Upper West Side for a quieter base with the same subway access. Both keep you within 10–25 minutes of most sights.

Is it cheaper to stay in Brooklyn or Queens?

Usually yes. Williamsburg, Downtown Brooklyn and Long Island City often cost 20–40% less than Midtown, with a 10–25 minute subway ride into Manhattan and quick access to the airports.

Do I need a car in New York City?

No. The subway runs 24 hours and a car is a cost and parking problem in Manhattan. Use the subway, buses and walking, and take a taxi or rideshare late at night.
