New York City in October: what to expect

October is the city's most reliable walking month. Early October still feels like late summer, with highs near 21 °C and evenings around 14 °C. By the last week, highs drop to about 15 °C and nights to 8 °C, and a cold snap is possible. Rain falls on roughly eight or nine days, usually as short showers rather than all-day rain.

Hurricane season runs to the end of November, so a remnant storm can bring a wet, windy day or two, but this is uncommon in New York. Daylight shrinks from about 11.5 hours at the start of the month to 10.5 by Halloween; clocks go back on the first Sunday in November, not in October.

October sits in the middle of the year for both crowds and prices. Weekends are noticeably busier than weekdays, and the last ten days of the month are the busiest stretch: Halloween events, half-term school breaks from the UK and Europe, and the New York City Marathon on the first Sunday in November pull in visitors.

Hotel rates are the main variable. A midweek room in early October is often cheaper than the same room in the final week, when rates can climb by a third or more. Flights from Europe and the US West Coast are usually reasonable if booked two to three months out. Museum and attraction queues are shorter on weekday mornings; the Empire State Building and Top of the Rock are best right at opening.

The month's biggest fixed point is Halloween on 31 October. The Village Halloween Parade in Manhattan draws large crowds, and the days around it are the busiest of the month. If you want a quieter trip, aim for the first three weeks.

Other regular October events include the New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center, Open House New York (a weekend when normally private buildings open to the public), and the start of the fall arts season at Carnegie Hall and the Metropolitan Opera. Columbus Day / Indigenous Peoples' Day falls on the second Monday and creates a long weekend. Dates shift each year, so check listings before booking.

Central Park is at its best: the trees turn from late October, with the peak usually in the first week of November. The Reservoir loop and the Mall are the classic walks. The High Line and Brooklyn Bridge Park are comfortable in October heat, unlike July and August.

For foliage without leaving the city, try the Bronx Botanical Garden or Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Further out, the Hudson Valley and the Catskills are day-trip distance by Metro-North or Amtrak, and October is their peak season — book train tickets ahead on fall weekends. Indoor options for a wet day: the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the American Museum of Natural History and the 9/11 Memorial Museum.

Pack for two seasons. A light jacket or sweater for mornings and evenings, a T-shirt or two for warm afternoons, and a compact rain jacket or umbrella. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else — you will likely walk 8–12 km a day. Bring one warmer layer if you are travelling in the last week of the month.

A refillable water bottle, a small day bag, and a plug adapter if you are coming from the UK, Europe or Australia (the US uses type A/B plugs at 120 V). Sunscreen is still worth packing for early October.

September is warmer and slightly quieter, with the same good walking weather. November turns colder and quieter between Halloween and Thanksgiving, and the first week brings the marathon and peak foliage. December is the holiday-lights month: busy, expensive and cold, but the most atmospheric if you want the Christmas version of the city.

If your dates are flexible and you want the best combination of weather and value, aim for the last week of September or the first three weeks of October.
