New York City in May: what to expect

May is the month New York stops being cold. Early May still needs a jacket in the morning; by the last week you can sit outside in a T-shirt until 8pm. Expect a mix: bright 24–26 °C afternoons, a few grey days in the low teens, and one or two thunderstorms that clear within an hour.

Rain arrives as showers rather than all-day drizzle, so a compact umbrella beats a rain jacket you will carry all afternoon. Humidity is still low compared with July and August, which is the main reason May feels easier than summer.

May splits into two halves. From 1 to about 20 May you get spring pricing: hotel rooms are noticeably cheaper than June, museums and the Empire State Building have short queues at opening, and you can walk the High Line or Brooklyn Bridge without shuffling.

The last week changes. Memorial Day falls on Monday 25 May 2026, a three-day weekend that fills hotels, trains and airports. If your dates are fixed to that weekend, book accommodation two to three months out and expect to pay June-level rates.

Broadway and off-Broadway shows are busy but not at holiday levels; TKTS and same-day rush tickets still work on weeknights. Restaurant reservations for popular spots are easier Sunday to Wednesday.

May is one of the busiest event months in the city. Dates below are the usual pattern; confirm the exact 2026 dates with organisers before planning around them.

Fleet Week brings US Navy and Coast Guard ships to the Hudson and a parade of sailors through Manhattan, usually in the last full week of May. The Ninth Avenue International Food Festival, one of the city's oldest street fairs, typically takes a weekend in mid-May in Hell's Kitchen. Dance Parade and the accompanying festival fill Broadway around 8th Street on a Saturday in mid-May.

Memorial Day itself brings the Little Neck–Douglaston Memorial Day Parade in Queens and wreath ceremonies; the beaches at Coney Island and the Rockaways open for the season. Earlier in the month, the Five Boro Bike Tour closes streets across all five boroughs on the first Sunday — a great day to cycle, a bad day to drive.

This is prime park weather. Central Park's lawns and the Conservatory Garden are at their best, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden's cherry and lilac collections peak early in the month, and the High Line is green and uncrowded before 10am. The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx is a half-day trip and quieter than Manhattan.

For views, go early: Top of the Rock and Edge are clearest in the morning before haze builds. The Staten Island Ferry remains the cheapest harbour ride, and May is warm enough to stay on the open deck. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge before 8am or after 7pm to avoid the crush.

Day trips work well now that the weather is mild: the beaches at Rockaway and Coney Island, Governors Island (seasonal ferry), and the Hudson Valley by Metro-North. If you want a longer trip, the Catskills and the Jersey Shore are both reachable in a couple of hours.

Pack for two seasons in one trip. Bring light layers you can shed by noon: a T-shirt, a light sweater or overshirt, and a packable jacket for evenings and the occasional cool day. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else — you will cover 8–12 km a day on pavement.

Add a compact umbrella, sunglasses and sunscreen (UV is strong by late May), and a refillable water bottle. If you plan to visit churches, the 9/11 Memorial or fine-dining rooms, one smart-casual outfit covers it. A small crossbody bag is safer than a backpack in crowds.

April is cooler and rainier but cheaper, with fewer tourists and the first blossoms. June is warmer and greener but crowds and prices step up sharply once school ends; if you want warm weather without peak pricing, the first three weeks of May beat both.
