New York
New York City
New York is a subway-and-walking city: do one area per half-day, take the park and museum in the morning and downtown early, and never plan two neighbourhoods more than 40 minutes apart for the same slot.
Manhattan looks small on a map and is not: its sights are 20–40 minutes apart by subway, queues and security lines eat the mornings, and the airports are 45–90 minutes away in traffic. Trips go wrong when a first-timer books three neighbourhoods in a day, arrives at a museum at noon on a weekend, or plans a tight airport ride at rush hour. Four clusters cover a first visit; add Brooklyn or a day trip only with spare days.

- Daily spend
- Budget $80–140 excl. bed · Mid $140–250 excl. bed · High $250+ excl. bed (estimate; check)
- SIM and data
- Install an eSIM before you fly; local prepaid SIMs are sold in phone shops.

- Plugs
- 120 V, US-style two-pin sockets (types A and B).
- Tipping
- Expected: 18–22% at sit-down restaurants, $1–2 per drink at a bar, 15–20% for taxis and ride-hail, and a few dollars for hotel staff.
- Water
- Tap water is safe to drink.
- Toilets
- Cafés, hotels, department stores and the public library; buy something in a café to use the toilet.
Get in
By air
- Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
- EWR to Midtown: a licensed cab or ride-hail car, 40–75 minutes, or the NJ Transit train to Penn Station — the risk is border queues and tunnel traffic.
- John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK)
- JFK to Midtown: a yellow cab or ride-hail car at the official pickup, 45–90 minutes depending on traffic — the risk is border queues and rush-hour traffic, not the cab rank.
Get around
Walk inside a cluster; subway between clusters; taxi or ride-hail with bags or late at night.
- Passes
- No pass needed for a short stay: tap a card at the gate (fares are capped weekly). Taxis and ride-hailing add up fast in traffic.
- Late at night
- The subway runs 24 hours but late-night service is slower and less frequent; check the app for your line.
See and do
019/11 Memorial and Museum
The memorial pools are open to the public; book a timed museum ticket in advance, allow half a day, and go early on a weekday.
02The Metropolitan Museum of Art
The city's largest art museum on the park's east edge: pick two wings and stop, since the building will outlast your energy; a good indoor rest in heat or rain.
03Central Park: Bethesda Terrace and the Lake
The park's central landmark, with a lake, arcade and fountain; walk it from the south in the morning, and allow 60–90 minutes.
04Grand Central Terminal
The 1913 station's main concourse and the lower-level food hall: a free 30-minute stop, best outside rush hour, and a good AC rest node.
05Washington Square Park
A free 30-minute stop under the arch and around the fountain; best on a late afternoon with street musicians, and easy to pair with Carmine Street.
Hours and prices are desk estimates (checked 2026-09); anything marked (check) is not confirmed. Coordinates open in any map app.
Day trips
| Where | How | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Brooklyn (Bridge, DUMBO, Prospect Park) | Subway 15–30 minutes | Half day |
| Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island | Ferry from Battery Park; tickets are timed | Half to full day |
| Hudson Valley or the Hamptons | Train or car, 1.5–3 h each way | Full day |
Eat
- Grand Central Oyster Bar
- The tiled restaurant on Grand Central's lower level, known for oysters and seafood; go outside the lunch rush, and book if you want a table rather than the counter.
- Joe's Pizza (Carmine Street)
- A long-running slice shop on Carmine Street: stand or take it to Washington Square Park; go off-peak, and expect a short queue at lunch and late at night.
Sleep
- Lower Manhattan
- Quieter evenings and cheaper weekends than Midtown, with the 9/11 Memorial and the Brooklyn Bridge on foot; fewer places to eat late.
- Midtown
- First-timers: a Midtown hotel is central for the subway, Grand Central and the park, but rooms are small and expensive; pick one with a 24-hour desk and a taxi-friendly door.
Language
English everywhere, with strong regional accents; Spanish is the second language in the Southwest, Texas, Florida, California and New York. Some words differ from British English: restroom (toilet), check (bill), gas (petrol), trunk (boot), first floor (ground floor).
- Measurements are imperial: miles, Fahrenheit, gallons, pounds. 100 km ≈ 62 miles; 30 °C ≈ 86 °F.
- Small talk with strangers is normal and friendly; it is not a sales tactic.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Red lines
- Do not pay a street 'guide' or 'tour' seller before you see a price.
- Keep voices low at the 9/11 Memorial.
Scams and watch-outs
- Unlicensed cab drivers offering rides inside the terminal: use only the marked taxi queue or the app.
- Costumed characters in Times Square who pose for photos and then demand money.
- Free 'friendship' bracelets or CDs pressed into your hand followed by a demand for payment.
