New Smyrna Beach
Give New Smyrna Beach 2–3 nights: beach mornings on the peninsula, Flagler Avenue afternoons, and a car for everything else.
New Smyrna Beach sits on a barrier island and a mainland split by the Intracoastal Waterway, about 32 km south of Daytona Beach. Two bridges link the halves. The beach side holds the hotels and Flagler Avenue; the mainland holds Canal Street and the historic core. You need a car: the airport is in Daytona Beach, and the sights spread across both sides of the water.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- The beach is nicknamed the shark-bite capital of the world; bites are mostly minor and near the inlet — check with lifeguards before swimming.
- June–November is hurricane season; storms can flood streets for days after they pass.
- Summer afternoons bring thunderstorms; plan beach time for the morning.
- Rip currents are common; swim near a lifeguard.
- Spring break crowds hit Flagler Avenue when schools close.
A relaxed beach town; the real risks are rip currents, summer storms and the inlet's shark bites, which are usually minor. Keep valuables out of sight at the beach and lock the car.
