New Quay
Cei Newydd
Give New Quay one full day and one night: harbour, a dolphin-watching boat and the Cei Bach coast walk. Two nights only if you want a beach day.
New Quay is a small Cardigan Bay fishing village with a working harbour, a sandy beach and a resident population of around 900 that swells in summer when the holiday parks fill. Bottlenose dolphins are seen from the harbour wall and the beach through the season. It is a base for coast walking and boat trips, not a sightseeing town: one day covers the centre, and the reason to stay longer is the water and the Wales Coast Path.

Get around
The village is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes. Buses run to Aberystwyth, Aberaeron and Cardigan; a car is the practical way to reach the beaches and villages along the coast. The A487 passes a few miles inland and the A486 is the last stretch into town.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- The Cei Bach circular walk only works at low tide: check a tide table before you set out, or you will be cut off.
- Dolphin sightings are wildlife, not a scheduled show: boats go out but nobody guarantees a sighting.
- Summer parking near the harbour fills by mid-morning; use the edge-of-town car parks and walk in.
- Mobile signal and card readers can be patchy in the surrounding lanes: carry some cash.
A quiet, low-crime village; the real hazards are the sea and the tide. Swim between the flags when a lifeguard is on duty, keep back from the harbour wall in swell, and check tide times before any beach or coast-path walk.
