New Port Richey
Give New Port Richey one full day and one night: a small 1920s river downtown, a state park on the Gulf, and cheap county buses. Skip it as a base without a car.
New Port Richey (NPR) is a small Gulf-coast city on the Cotee River, about 30 mi north of Tampa. Its draw is a compact historic Main Street, a riverwalk with kayak launches, and Werner-Boyce Salt Springs State Park. Most travellers pass through in a day or use it as a cheap, quiet base for the Big Bend Coast and Tampa Bay.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: US-19 runs north–south through town, SR-54 east–west to Land O' Lakes and Zephyrhills. Downtown itself is walkable and has wider sidewalks, but US-19 is not safe to cross on foot. Pasco County Public Transportation runs county buses with connections toward Pinellas and Hillsborough counties.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- US-19 is a fast, multi-lane highway with a record of pedestrian and cyclist crashes: cross only at signals.
- Summer heat and humidity are severe; plan outdoor time before 10:00 and carry water.
- Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov, peaking Aug–Oct: check forecasts and know your evacuation zone.
- Gulf View Square Mall is largely empty; don't plan a shopping trip around it.
NPR is a quiet small city and most visits are trouble-free. The real risks are US-19 traffic, summer heat and storms, and hurricane season from Jun–Nov: check forecasts and never cross US-19 on foot outside a signal.
