New Plymouth is Taranaki's only city, on the Tasman Sea coast under Mount Taranaki, roughly midway between Auckland and Wellington but well to the west of State Highway 1. It is a compact, walkable centre with an art gallery, a botanic park and a coastal path, and it works as a two-night stop on a North Island loop or as a base for the mountain. Most travellers come for the mountain and the coastal walk, not for the city itself.

Get around
The centre is walkable: the Coastal Walkway links the CBD, Pukekura Park, the beach and Moturoa on foot or by bike. Citylink buses run about eleven routes on weekdays (single fare $3.70), two routes on Saturday and none on Sunday. A car is needed for Mount Taranaki, the Surf Highway and day trips.

New Plymouth is a small, low-crime city and the centre is safe on foot by day and evening. The real risks are the mountain (fast weather changes, unprepared summit attempts), coastal water and long rural drives on SH3.
