New Milford
Give New Milford one full day and one night: the green, Bank Street and Lovers Leap on foot, then a car for Candlewood Lake and the flea market.
New Milford is the largest town by area in Connecticut, about 62 square miles, with roughly 28,000 residents and a compact walkable centre on the Housatonic River. Downtown is small shops, restaurants and a village green; everything outside the centre needs a car. It works as a one-night base inside the Litchfield Hills, or a day trip from Danbury, about 30 minutes south on Route 7.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: Route 7 and Route 202 meet in the centre and most businesses sit on Route 7/Danbury Rd. The centre itself is walkable in 10–15 minutes end to end, but there are few pavements beyond it. HARTransit runs the HART 7 and Loop New Milford routes to Walmart, the hospital, the high school and Route 7; check current timetables before relying on them.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Do not eat fish from the Housatonic River: mercury levels are the reason given locally.
- Outside the centre there are long stretches with no pavement, so walking between sights is not realistic.
- Winter ice on the green and back roads; summer weekends fill Candlewood Lake car parks early.
- Village Fair Days and the Bridgewater Fair close roads and fill beds: check dates before booking.
Low crime for a US town of this size; the practical risks are driving on dark back roads, ice in winter and swimming areas without lifeguards. Use 911 for anything urgent.
