New Bedford was the world's leading whaling port in the 19th century and the money it made is still standing: a compact national historical park of cobblestone streets, the Whaling Museum with a full-size ship, and a mile of Victorian mansions on County Street. Get around
Downtown is walkable: the national park, Whaling Museum, Seamen's Bethel and the waterfront are within about 15 minutes on foot. SRTA buses cover the city and the terminal on Elm Street is the hub; Peter Pan runs to Providence. A car helps for the South End beaches, Fort Taber and day trips, and parking garages sit two blocks off Elm Street downtown.
