Go as a half-day stop from Yekaterinburg or Nizhny Tagil, not a base: the Leaning Tower is the whole trip, and weekends are crowded.
Nevyansk was the unofficial capital of 18th-century Ural industry under the Demidov family, and almost none of that survives except the Leaning Tower — a tilted, cast-iron-threaded structure from 1721–1742 that you can only enter on a museum-guided tour. The town is 75 km north of Yekaterinburg and 50 km south of Nizhny Tagil, so it works as a stop between the two, not as a destination on its own.

Get around
The centre is small and walkable: the dam, factory complex, Revolyutsii Square and the tower sit together. Minibuses run from the train station toward the historical centre (get off at the universam Yuzhny stop, 23 Lenina St). Taxis are cheap; the local firms are Gorod, Iva, Motor and Shturman.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Scams and watch-outs
- Tower entry is by museum-guided tour only, usually in Russian; English needs booking about a week ahead.
- Weekend tours run every half hour and the tower's passages get congested — go on a weekday if you can.
- Some Ekaterinburg–Nizhny Tagil buses do not stop in Nevyansk: ask before boarding.
- The factory museum exists but publishes no schedule or access rules — ask at the History and Architecture Museum.
- The local museum's website has been reported dead; confirm hours by phone before travelling.
A small, quiet town and generally safe by day. Winter cold and ice underfoot, unlit streets after dark and the tower's narrow stairs when tours are packed are the risks to plan for (check).
