Neumünster
Give Neumünster half a day or one night as a rail stop between Hamburg and Kiel, not a base: the old town was destroyed in 1945, so there is no historic core.
Neumünster is the fourth-largest city in Schleswig-Holstein and a rail junction 60 km north of Hamburg and 40 km south of Kiel. Around 40% of the city was destroyed by Allied bombing in World War II, so there is no old town to walk. What remains is a textile museum, a zoo, a lake on the northern edge and a strong shopping role for the region. Most travellers pass through on the Hamburg–Kiel or Hamburg–Flensburg line; a stop makes sense for the museum, the zoo or a cheap bed between the two bigger cities.
