Nestos
Νέστος
Spend 1–2 days for birdwatching, short hikes in the gorge and a beach stay; longer if you want multiple hikes or archaeological stops.
Nestos is a nature‑focused area in East Macedonia. The river delta and gorge offer birdwatching, easy hikes and water activities. With a small selection of hotels and campsites, a base in Chrysoupolis or Toxotes covers most sights in a day or two.

Language
Greek uses its own alphabet, and signs in cities, on roads and at sites also appear in Latin letters. English is widely spoken wherever tourists go and by most people under 50. A few words of Greek — kaliméra, efcharistó, parakaló — are warmly received.
- Yes is 'ne' and no is 'óchi' — the 'ne' that sounds like no catches people out.
- Transliteration varies: the same place can appear as Chania, Hania or Xania; match the Greek letters on signs.
- The Greek question mark is a semicolon (;).
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say 'kaliméra' (morning) or 'kalispéra' (evening) on entering shops and tavernas; avoid: Launching straight into a question
- Hospitality: Accept offered coffee, sweets or raki; it is part of the welcome; avoid: Refusing flatly — take a little
- Churches: Covered shoulders and knees; quiet voices; a small candle donation; avoid: Turning your back on the altar for photos during a service
- Gestures: Wave with the palm turned towards yourself; avoid: The open palm pushed forward (moutza)
- Conversation: Family, food and football are easy topics; avoid: Lecturing on the debt crisis, Türkiye or the name of North Macedonia
- Dinner at a home: Bring pastries or wine; arrive a little late; avoid: Leaving food on the plate if you have been served more
- Dress: Casual; long trousers or skirt for monasteries; avoid: Swimwear in town, shops and churches
Scams and watch-outs
- No bridge over the delta – to cross you must drive to Toxotes.
- Bus stops are far from attractions; allow extra walking time.
- Summer heat can be intense; bring sun protection and plenty water.
The area is low‑risk; main concerns are traffic on narrow rural roads and summer heat. Keep valuables secure in accommodation.
