Give Nerja 2 nights as a beach-and-caves base: Balcón de Europa, Burriana beach and the Caves of Nerja, no car needed.
Nerja is a low-rise resort on the eastern Costa del Sol, 50 km from Málaga, built on a hillside above a headland. There is no train or airport: you arrive by bus or car. Two nights covers the Balcón, one or two beaches and the Caves of Nerja; add a third for Frigiliana or the Río Chillar walk. It is a summer beach town first and a sightseeing town second.

Get around
Walk. The centre is small but on a slope, so expect hills between the Balcón, the beaches and the bus stop. Local buses run from near the beach by the Mónica hotel uphill towards the Sol supermarket and out past the market site; check the routes and times locally before relying on them, and do not mix the two services up. A car helps only for the caves, Frigiliana and the Sierra walks.

Scams and watch-outs
- No train or airport in Nerja; travel by bus or car from Málaga.
- Parking is difficult on the narrow, sometimes one-way central streets; central car parks are an alternative.
- Watch for vehicles changing lanes on roundabouts and be ready to stop at pedestrian crossings.
- The October feria can bring late-night noise near the celebrations.
Use normal precautions with bags in busy areas. Nerja's hillside streets, beach access stairs and cave steps can be difficult for visitors with limited mobility; take care in summer heat.
