The compact centre is walkable, but the region's beaches, wineries and Abel Tasman trailheads need a car. Get around
Central Nelson is small enough to walk. EBus runs four city routes at 30-min intervals (fares $2 with a Beecard); regional routes to Richmond, Mapua, Motueka and Wakefield are less frequent. A rental car is the practical choice for beaches, wineries and national park trailheads. A Late Late Bus runs Fri–Sat nights from Trafalgar St to Richmond ($4).
