Nelson is a former cotton-weaving town in Pendle, Lancashire, about 45 minutes by car from Manchester and under an hour from Leeds. It grew around a coaching inn named after Lord Nelson and lost most of its industry in the 20th century. There is no hotel in town, so most visitors sleep in Burnley or Clitheroe and use Nelson for the British in India Museum, the parks and the walks towards Pendle Hill.

Get around
The town centre is walkable in 15 minutes. Nelson railway station has roughly hourly trains towards Burnley, Blackburn, Preston and Blackpool, and to Colne in the other direction. Local buses link the centre with Barrowford, Colne and Burnley. A car makes the Pendle villages (Barley, Roughlee, Newchurch) and the hill walks far easier.
