Nelligen
Treat Nelligen as a half-day stop on the Kings Highway, not a base: 2–3 hours for the river, the bridge and lunch, then sleep in Batemans Bay 8 km away.
Nelligen is a village of a few hundred people at the eastern end of the Kings Highway, where the road meets the Clyde River 8 km from Batemans Bay. There is one café, one pub with rooms and a bridge you can walk across. Almost everything a visitor wants — beaches, oyster sheds, more beds and more food — is in Batemans Bay, so most travellers pass through, eat, and carry on.

Get around
You need a car. The Kings Highway (B52) is the only through road, and Nelligen has no town bus. Batemans Bay is 8 km (5 mi) east (about 6 min), Braidwood about 50 km (31 mi) west (40 min) and Canberra roughly 110 min west. A Murrays coach runs daily between Canberra and Narooma via Batemans Bay — the Narooma-bound service arrives in the morning and the Canberra-bound service in the afternoon — so a car-free visit means being dropped at Batemans Bay and taking a taxi or rideshare the last 8 km (5 mi). Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- The Clyde River floods. The old bridge was cut in severe floods, which is why the replacement opened in 2023; check road status after heavy rain before driving the highway.
- Fuel, ATMs and supermarkets are in Batemans Bay, not Nelligen. Fill up before you turn off.
- Phone coverage is patchy in the river valley and on the highway west of town.
- Kangaroos and wombats are on the road at dawn and dusk along the Kings Highway; slow down.
- Bushfire risk is real in this region in summer. Check the NSW RFS app and local alerts, and have a plan if you are camping or in a holiday park.
Very safe for a village of this size; the real risks are the highway at dawn and dusk, river flooding after heavy rain and summer bushfire. Petty crime is rare — lock the car and don't leave valuables visible at the bridge car park.
