Neerim South
Stop for 2–4 hours on the way to Noojee or Mount Baw Baw: bakery, playground and pub. Sleep here only if you want a quiet Gippsland base.
Neerim South is a small farming town on the road between Warragul and the Baw Baw ranges, about 100 km east of Melbourne. There is no single headline sight: people come for the bakery, the pub, the free barbecue playground and as a fuel-and-food stop before the Noojee forest or the Mount Baw Baw snow. A car makes it easy; without one you are tied to a weekday bus.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: the town is a strip on Main Neerim Road and the sights people come for (Noojee, Mount Baw Baw, the forest drives) are 20–60 min away. On foot you can cover the bakery, pub, playground and IGA in about 10 minutes. Public transport is one weekday V/Line train to Warragul plus a bus toward Noojee that stops at the post office; Myki covers it, but the timetable is thin.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- The Warragul–Noojee bus runs on weekdays only and is not a turn-up-and-go service: check the timetable before you build a day around it.
- Fuel and food thin out fast toward Noojee and Mount Baw Baw; fill up and buy supplies in Neerim South or Warragul.
- Mount Baw Baw access can require chains in winter and the resort entry is a separate charge: check conditions before driving up.
- Mobile coverage is patchy in the forest and valley roads; download offline maps.
- Kangaroos and wombats on the roads at dawn and dusk: slow down and scan the verges.
A quiet country town and generally safe. The real risks are wildlife and logging trucks on the forest roads, winter ice and snow on the Baw Baw road, and bushfire risk on hot, windy summer days: check the fire danger rating before heading into the hills.
