Use Navi Mumbai as a cheaper, calmer base for Mumbai or a stop before the Konkan: 1–2 nights, not a sightseeing destination in itself.
Navi Mumbai is a planned satellite city across the harbour from Mumbai, founded in 1971 and home to over a million people. It is a grid of nodes — Vashi, Nerul, CBD Belapur, Kharghar, Panvel — linked by the Harbour, Trans-Harbour and Port suburban lines and the Navi Mumbai Metro. Hotels cost less than Mumbai's, the air is cleaner, and Atal Setu now puts south Mumbai about 30 minutes away by car. Come for the base, the Belapur fort ruins, the monsoon waterfall at Pandavkada and the malls; skip it if you want walkable colonial sights.

Suburban rail is the fastest way between nodes: Harbour Line from Mumbai, Trans-Harbour Line from Thane, Port Line to Panvel. The Navi Mumbai Metro runs 11 stations between CBD Belapur and Pendhar. NMMT buses cover the gaps. Palm Beach Road links Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Kharghar and Panvel by car. Auto-rickshaws work on the meter inside a node; between nodes drivers often ask a return fare — agree before boarding.

Scams and watch-outs
- Mumbai auto-rickshaws are not allowed in; change at the Airoli or Mankhurd toll gates.
- Some taxi and rickshaw meters are doctored — use a branded cab app or ask for the meter card.
- Pandavkada Falls is closed by authorities in heavy monsoon after accidents; do not push past barriers.
- Stopping a car on Atal Setu carries a heavy fine.
- Bridges into Mumbai charge a toll; drivers may ask you to pay it on top of the fare.
Navi Mumbai is calmer and cleaner than Mumbai and generally safe by day and night. The real risks are doctored meters, monsoon flooding and the closed waterfall paths; use app cabs after dark and keep small notes for fares.
