Naumburg
Naumburg (Saale)
Give Naumburg one full day and one night: the UNESCO cathedral, the old town and a Saale-Unstrut wine tasting. Two nights if you add Bad Kösen or Schulpforte.
Naumburg is a small town in southern Saxony-Anhalt, 35–50 minutes by regional train from Halle and Leipzig. Its St Peter and Paul Cathedral, added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2018, holds the 13th-century donor figures and the Uta statue. The old town is walkable in an afternoon; the surrounding Saale-Unstrut valley, Germany's smallest wine region, is what fills a second day. Few people under 50 speak much English, so carry a translation app.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met
- Names: Herr / Frau plus surname until invited to use first names; avoid: Using 'du' with officials or older strangers
- Punctuality: Arrive on time for tours, dinners and appointments; avoid: Being more than 5–10 minutes late without a message
- Queues and rules: Follow signs, wait at red lights, sort rubbish; avoid: Walking in cycle lanes
- Conversation: Direct and factual; people say what they mean; avoid: Taking directness as rudeness, or joking about the Nazi era
- Home visit: Bring flowers (odd number, not red roses) or wine; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving early
- Paying: Say the total including tip as you pay; avoid: Leaving coins on the table and walking off
Scams and watch-outs
- English is limited outside hotels and the cathedral ticket desk; download an offline German pack.
- The Hauptbahnhof is 1.8 km from the centre: allow 20 minutes on foot or take tram 4.
- Intercity trains call only a few times a day since the high-speed line bypassed the town; most trips mean changing in Halle, Leipzig or Erfurt.
- Cathedral hours shorten from November to February and Sunday opening starts later; check the official site before a winter trip.
- Kloster Pforta is a working boarding school: visit the church and park, do not open doors or walk into lessons.
Naumburg is a low-risk small town; the real issues are uneven cobbles, dark unlit riverside paths after a wine tasting, and limited English when you need help.
