Go for one night, or two in December: the historic district is a 3–4 hour walk, and the Christmas lights are the only reason to book ahead.
Natchitoches is the oldest settlement in the Louisiana Purchase, a small river town on Cane River Lake with a brick Front Street, Creole houses and a French-Spanish colonial fort. Most visitors come for one night in a B&B, or for the Christmas lights festival from the weekend after Thanksgiving to January 6. There is no public transit: you need a car to reach the plantations and the fort.

Get around
No public transit. The historic district is walkable in 15–20 minutes end to end, and parking near Front Street is usually easy outside festival weekends. A car is needed for the fort, the fish hatchery and the Cane River plantations.
