Natal
Give Natal 3 nights: 1 for Ponta Negra and the fort, 2 as a base for Genipabu and Pipa day trips. Skip it if you want nightlife or a colonial old town.
Natal is the capital of Rio Grande do Norte and one of Brazil's most-visited cities, but its own sights are thin: a star-shaped 1598 fort, a big dune park and a good beach at Ponta Negra. Most travellers use it as a base for the state's dunes, lagoons and beaches, which need a car or a buggy tour. It is calmer and safer than Recife or Salvador, and the trade winds keep it warm rather than hot all year.

Get around
Buses cost about R$4 and you can pay on board; a bus card gives a free second ride within an hour. Midway Mall, Via Direta and Natal Shopping are the main bus hubs, and the 'Line R' bus is the airport link. Uber and 99 are cheap and easier than buses for beach-to-beach trips. A rental car pays off if you plan day trips: Parnamirim and Extremoz beaches are awkward by public transport. Urban trains are cheap but reach no tourist sights.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, hug or cheek kiss (one in São Paulo, two in Rio); avoid: Being stiff with new acquaintances
- Gestures: Use thumbs-up freely; avoid: The OK hand sign (it is rude)
- Language: Try Portuguese; say obrigado/obrigada; avoid: Defaulting to Spanish
- Time: Expect relaxed social punctuality; avoid: Being late for tours and flights
- Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended
Scams and watch-outs
- The rainy season runs Mar–Jul and peaks in Jun; beach days can be washed out.
- Kiosk chairs and tables on the beach may be free with a purchase or charged (about R$15): agree the price before you sit.
- Unlicensed buggy drivers operate on the coast and accidents happen: book through your hotel or a licensed operator.
- Ponta Negra has no Bradesco bank and few supermarkets; the nearest bank is toward Natal Shopping.
- The Historic Centre is quiet at night and not a nightlife district; don't plan an evening there.
Natal is calmer than Recife or Salvador, but it is still a Brazilian capital: use Uber or 99 after dark, carry a phone you can lose, and avoid empty streets and beaches at night. The bigger practical risks are rip currents, sun and unlicensed buggy drivers.
