Nashua
Nashua, New Hampshire
Give Nashua one night, or a half-day stop for Mine Falls Park and downtown Main Street. It is a tax-free shopping and commuter base, not a sightseeing city.
Nashua is New Hampshire's second-largest city, about 45 minutes north of Boston on U.S. 3. Its draw is practical: no sales tax on shopping, a walkable downtown strip of restaurants and bars, and Mine Falls Park, 325 acres of canal-side trails a short walk from Main Street. Most travellers use it as a cheap bed near Boston or a stop between Manchester and Lowell.

The nearest commuter rail is in Lowell, Massachusetts, about a 20-minute drive, on the MBTA network into Boston.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No interstate runs through the city; you reach it via U.S. 3 from I-93 or I-495, and exits are numbered 1–7.
- Winter snow and ice make side streets and the Mine Falls trails slippery; check conditions before a walk.
- Downtown bars get loud and busy on weekend nights; Main Street parking fills after 20:00.
- New Hampshire has no sales tax, but prepared food and hotel rooms are taxed: the saving is on goods, not meals or beds.
Nashua is a low-risk city by US standards; the real issues are winter driving, unlit trail sections in Mine Falls after dark, and weekend bar crowds on Main Street. Keep valuables out of sight in mall parking lots.
