Narromine
One night is enough: gliding field, soldiers wall and a Dandaloo Street meal, then move on to Dubbo 30 min east.
Narromine is a small Central West town on the Mitchell Highway, about 30 minutes' drive from Dubbo and known above all as a gliding centre. There is no regular passenger air service; you arrive by car or by the weekday coach link from Dubbo. Most travellers use it as a half-day or one-night stop between Dubbo and the Newell Highway, or as a base for the Macquarie Marshes. Two nights only makes sense if you are flying gliders or birdwatching the wetlands.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer days regularly pass 40°C: carry water and refuel before long drives.
- Fuel and food options thin out west of town; fill up in Narromine or Dubbo.
- Kangaroos and emus on the highway at dawn and dusk — avoid driving then if you can.
- Mobile coverage is patchy on the roads towards the Macquarie Marshes.
A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are heat, long empty drives and wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk.
