Narrandera
One night on the Newell or Sturt highway, or a half-day stop: koalas at the wetlands, the big playable guitar, then drive on.
Narrandera is a Riverina town of about 4,400 people on the Murrumbidgee River, where the Newell and Sturt highways meet at Gillenbah just south of town. It is a road-trip stop rather than a destination: a koala colony, river red gums, a small museum and a playable big guitar fill an afternoon. Trains run once a week; coaches connect to the Sydney–Melbourne XPT.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are long: Wagga Wagga is 98 km east, Griffith about 100 km north, Jerilderie 108 km south. Fuel at Gillenbah before a late run.
- Kangaroos and emus on the roads at dawn and dusk, especially the Newell and Irrigation Way.
- Summer days pass 35 °C; carry water and walk the river tracks early.
- The weekly train is one service each way — check the timetable before you plan around it.
A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are highway driving (kangaroos at dawn and dusk), summer heat and long fuel gaps on the Newell.
