Närpes is a Swedish-speaking farming town on the Ostrobothnian coast, known as Finland's tomato capital: greenhouses ring the centre and most Finnish supermarket tomatoes start here. The town is spread over a wide forest and field area with several village centres, so a car is close to essential. Sights are modest; the appeal is rural quiet, the archipelago and the tomato carnival in July.

- Many restaurants and the summer hotel close outside Jun–Aug; check before booking.
- The outer archipelago is a protected Natura 2000 area: stay on trails and take your waste with you.
Very safe. The real risks are driving on dark, icy roads in winter, long unlit stretches between villages and closed services outside summer: fill the tank and carry water.
