Narberth
Arberth
Give Narberth one night, two if you want Oakwood or Bluestone: it is a food-and-shops town, not a sightseeing base. A car makes it work.
Narberth is a small inland town in Pembrokeshire, about 2,500 people, on the A40 between Haverfordwest and Carmarthen. It is known for independent shops and restaurants on High Street and Market Street, a ruined Norman castle, and the theme park and holiday village at Canaston Bridge a few miles west. Most visitors pass through on the way to Tenby or St Davids; the town rewards a single unhurried night.

Get around
The town itself is walkable in 10 minutes end to end. Everything else — Oakwood, Bluestone, the beaches, Tenby — needs a car or a taxi; buses along the A40 are thin, especially on Sundays. The Swansea–Pembroke train stops at Narberth station on request, about a 15-minute walk from the centre.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Narberth railway station is a request stop: tell the conductor you want to get off, and signal the driver to board.
- Many restaurants and shops close one or two days midweek outside summer: check before you build a day around one.
- Oakwood Theme Park and Bluestone are 4–5 km west of town with no useful footpath: do not plan to walk.
Narberth is a low-crime small town; the real risks are narrow lanes with no pavement, fast A-road traffic after dark, and tide and cliff hazards if you walk the coast path nearby.
