Narayanpur
Half a day from Pune for the Purandar Fort climb and views; not a base. Go at opening to avoid midday heat.
Narayanpur is a village 40 km south-west of Pune, known for the 13th-century Purandar Fort that rises 700 m above the base. The fort has two parts — Purandar and Vajragad — and a 30-minute scramble from the Purandareshwar Temple leads to the Balekilla. Most visitors come for the fort, the views and the Maratha history; the village itself has little else. A half-day trip from Pune is enough.
