Naracoorte
Stay one night, two if you want both cave tours: the fossil caves are the reason to come, the town itself is a 20-minute stop.
Naracoorte is a small South Australian town on the Limestone Coast, halfway between Adelaide and Mount Gambier, and the gateway to Naracoorte Caves National Park — the state's only UNESCO World Heritage site, listed for its fossil beds of extinct Australian megafauna. Almost everyone comes for the caves, sleeps one night, and drives on. The town has a sheep-history museum, an art gallery and a handful of places to eat; the wine regions of Coonawarra and Padthaway are within an hour's drive.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances are long: Adelaide is about 4 h by car, Mount Gambier about 1 h 30 min. Do not plan a same-day return to Adelaide after a cave tour.
- Cave tours run on set times and sell out in school holidays; book ahead and arrive 15 minutes early.
- Kangaroos and wombats on the Riddoch Highway at dawn and dusk — drive slowly.
- Summer heat: carry water, and check total fire ban days before any bush walking.
A quiet, safe country town. The real risks are long drives, wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk, and summer heat — not crime.
