Naples in April: what to expect

April is the month Naples stops being a winter city. Days reach roughly 18–20 °C, nights stay near 10 °C, and the sun is out for about 7 hours a day. It is warm enough for a light jacket at breakfast and a T-shirt by early afternoon, and cool enough that climbing to Castel Sant'Elmo or walking the lungomare does not leave you soaked.

Rain still arrives: expect around 8 rain days, often a single heavy shower in the afternoon rather than all-day drizzle. The sea sits near 16 °C, so swimming is for the hardy; most beach clubs along the Posillipo and the Sorrento peninsula are only part-way through reopening. Wind off the bay can make evenings feel colder than the number suggests — a layer matters more than a coat.

April is high season in Naples, and the reason is the calendar rather than the weather. Easter can fall in late March or in April — check the date for your year — and 25 April (Liberation Day) makes a long weekend that Italians use for city breaks. On those dates hotels in the historic centre, Chiaia and the port area sell out and prices jump; trains from Rome and Florence fill days in advance.

Outside the holiday windows, April is manageable. Weekday mornings at the Naples National Archaeological Museum and the Cappella Sansevero are far calmer than in May or June, and the ferries to Capri, Ischia and Procida are busy but not yet at summer crush. Book the two big museums and any underground tour in advance regardless of the date; the small rooms cap entry.

Naples' April calendar is built around two national holidays and the start of the outdoor season. Easter brings processions and religious events across the city and in nearby towns; 25 April is a public holiday with parades and a long weekend. Confirm dates each year, since Easter moves.

Beyond the holidays, the Maggio dei Monumenti programme usually begins at the end of April or in early May, opening churches, cloisters and courtyards that are normally closed — check the current programme. The city's open-air season also restarts: guided walks on the Rione Sanità and along the waterfront, and the first boat trips of the year to the islands.

April suits everything that involves walking, which is most of Naples. Do the historic centre — Spaccanapoli, the Duomo, the Cappella Sansevero — in the morning, and save the hill and the waterfront for the afternoon light. The Naples National Archaeological Museum is a good wet-weather fallback; a shower is the one thing that will send you indoors.

Day trips work well before the summer heat. Pompeii and Herculaneum are far more comfortable in April than in July, and the Circumvesuviana trains run frequently. Capri, Ischia and Procida are reachable by ferry, though the sea is still cold for swimming; the Amalfi Coast and Sorrento are pleasant for a day but many coastal hotels and some seasonal ferries only reopen through March and April — check before you commit.

Pack for two seasons in one day. Mornings and evenings need a light jacket or a mid-layer; midday is T-shirt weather. A compact umbrella or a packable rain shell earns its place given the roughly 8 rain days. Comfortable walking shoes matter more here than anywhere else in Italy — the historic centre is cobbled and the hills are steep.

Add sunglasses and sunscreen: April sun in Naples is stronger than the temperature suggests. If you plan a day on the water or on Capri, bring a windproof layer, as the crossing and the island's exposed viewpoints are cool. A small day bag is useful for the museum and ferry days.

March is cooler and quieter, with lower prices and more rain; some coastal places are still shut. May is warmer and greener, with the sea approaching swimmable temperatures, but it is the busiest and priciest month of the spring. If your dates are flexible and you want the best weather-to-crowd ratio, aim for a non-holiday week in April or the second half of May.
