Nankoku
南国
Half a day: cycle the Monobe River, see two Shikoku pilgrimage temples and the castle ruins. Not a base — sleep in Kochi city.
Nankoku is a small city just east of Kochi city, best known for Oko Castle ruins (cherry blossoms in spring), two temples of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, and easy cycling along the Monobe River. Most travellers pass through on the way to Cape Ashizuri or Shimanto. One morning or afternoon is enough.

- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags

- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Temples are active pilgrimage sites: be quiet, remove shoes where indicated, no photography inside halls.
- Oko Castle ruins have no shelter: bring water and sun protection in warm months.
- Canoeing on the Monobe River requires a guide or rental; check availability in advance.
Very safe. The main risks are summer heat, bicycles on narrow roads and the occasional wild boar near the river at dusk.
