Nangqen
囊谦
One night is enough to see the main monastery and feel the town; two nights if you want to explore the remote monasteries south on G214. Most travellers pass through on the way between Yushu and Tibet.
Nangqen is a small Tibetan town in southern Qinghai, the last stop on the G214 before the Tibetan border. It has a lively monastery, a daily market and a handful of guesthouses. The draw is the road south: dramatic valleys, cliffside monasteries and the entry to Riwoqe in Tibet. The town itself is a one-night stop.

Scams and watch-outs
- Winter: no running water in many hotels; check before booking.

- Altitude: Nangqen is about 3,600 m; take it easy on arrival.
- No ATM that reliably accepts foreign cards; bring enough cash from Yushu or Xining.
Nangqen is safe. The main risks are altitude sickness (3,600 m) and cold in winter. Traffic on G214 is light but fast; watch for trucks on the narrow streets.
