Give Nanchong one night only if you are already in northeast Sichuan; otherwise skip it and put the two nights into Langzhong Ancient City, 1 h away.
Nanchong is a prefecture-level city of about 5.6 million in the hills of northeast Sichuan, second in population only to Chengdu, and a rail junction on the Chengdu–Dazhou line. The city itself is a working river town with a pagoda, a riverside park and good Sichuan food; the reason travellers come this far is Langzhong Ancient City, an hour north by train. Treat Nanchong as a transport base and a food stop, not a sightseeing destination.

Get around
City buses cover the centre and cost ¥1–2, exact change or a mobile ride code; taxis and ride-hailing are cheap for short hops. There is no metro in Nanchong. For Langzhong, use the train from Nanchong North rather than the bus.

- Summer heat and humidity in July–August are the main physical risk; plan indoor or early-morning sightseeing.
Nanchong is a low-crime city and normal precautions apply. The real risks are summer heat, exact-fare buses with no change, and unlicensed taxis at the airport: use the official queue or a ride-hailing app.
