Namyangju
남양주
Skip as a base unless you want Jeong Yak-yong's sites or Gwangneung forest: most travellers day-trip from Seoul on the Gyeongchun or Gyeongui-Jungang line.
Namyangju is a green, low-rise city on Seoul's northeastern edge, spread along the Han and Bukhan rivers and the Gyeongchun rail line. Its draw is quiet: the Jeong Yak-yong historic site and Dasan Ecological Park at Joan, the Silhak Museum, the National Gwangneung Arboretum, and river parks. Sights sit far apart and reward a car or a full day on the train, so most visitors come from Seoul and go back the same evening.

Get around
The Gyeongui-Jungang line (Donong, Yangjeong, Deokso, Dosim, Paldang, Ungilsan) and the Gyeongchun line (Byeollae to Maseok) cover the city, but stations are far from the sights. Local and village buses fill the gaps; a taxi starts around ₩4,800. Public bikes (Elecle) work along the river paths. A car is the practical choice for Joan-myeon and Gwangneung.

- Riverside parks and forest paths have no lighting after dark.
Very safe by any standard. The real risks are long, unlit riverside and forest paths after dark, thin bus service in the outer towns, and summer heat and downpours in July and August.
