Nagpur sits at the geographic centre of India, which is why it works as a break in a long rail or flight route rather than a destination in itself. The city is Maharashtra's winter capital and the gateway to Vidarbha: the Zero Mile Stone, Deekshabhoomi stupa, a 19th-century museum and the tiger parks at Tadoba and Pench. Sights are spread over 10 km, the metro and autos cover them, and most travellers pass through in one night.

Get around
Autos (yellow and black) are the default for short hops; agree the fare first or use a ride-hailing app. The Nagpur Metro has two lines meeting at Sitabuldi: Orange (Automotive Square–Khapri, includes the airport) and Aqua (Prajapati Nagar–Lokmanya Nagar). City buses are cheap but crowded and need route knowledge. A car with driver is the practical way to reach Tadoba, Pench or Ramtek.

- Greeting: Namaste (palms together) or a handshake between men; wait for a woman to offer her hand; avoid: Hugging or kissing strangers

Scams and watch-outs

- Tiger reserves need permits booked in advance and are closed in the monsoon — check dates before you build a trip around one.
- Summer power cuts and water shortages happen; pick a hotel with a backup generator.
Nagpur is a normal Indian big city: petty theft and overcharging are the real risks, not violence. Women travelling alone report stares and the usual caution after dark — use app cabs at night, and drink bottled or filtered water.
