Nagoya (officially Lubuk Baja) is the commercial heart of Batam, 10–15 minutes from Harbour Bay ferry terminal. It is a stopover town, not a destination: malls, pujasera food courts, cheap hotels and a nightlife strip. Most travellers use it for one night before or after the Singapore ferry, or as a base for a Batam weekend.

Get around
Nagoya is compact but pavements are patchy, so most trips are by ride-hailing app (Gojek, Grab) or shared taxi. A shared taxi to Sekupang is about Rp12,000 per person, a chartered one about Rp40,000, and Harbour Bay about Rp15,000 (check). Renting a scooter is common but only with a valid licence and a helmet.

Scams and watch-outs
- Traffic in Batam peaks hard; allow an hour to reach Tanjung Uncang or Nongsapura.
- The old Batu Ampar ferry terminal is closed — use Harbour Bay.
- Some bars in the entertainment district have no posted prices: ask the total before you order.
- Carry cash for pujasera stalls and small shops; many accept Singapore dollars but at their own rate.
- Ride-hailing pickups are restricted at some malls and the ferry terminal: walk to the marked point.
Batam is generally safe for tourists, but Nagoya's entertainment district is the sleazy end of the island: agree prices first, keep to licensed venues, and use ride-hailing at night rather than walking back.
