Nagano is the prefectural capital and a temple city built around Zenkō-ji, a pilgrimage site since the 7th century. It hosted the 1998 Winter Olympics, and its real value for travellers is as a launch point: Shiga Kogen, Hakuba, Jigokudani's snow monkeys and the onsen towns of the Chikuma valley are all within reach. The city itself is compact and walkable in a day.

Get around
The centre is walkable: Nagano Station to Zenkō-ji is about 30 min on foot, or 10 min by the Gururingo loop bus (¥100 a ride). The Nagano Dentetsu line runs north to Obuse and Yudanaka for the monkey park. Regional buses and the Shinano railway serve the valleys; a car helps for Matsushiro and the ski areas.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Winter brings heavy snow: a source climate chart gives January snowfall around 630 mm, so allow extra time and wear boots.
- Zenkō-ji's hidden Buddha replica is shown only every six years; the next display is due 2027.
- Many Matsushiro and mountain buses are infrequent and stop early: check the last return before you set out.
- Some izakaya and small bars have no English menu or posted prices: ask the total before ordering.
Nagano is a low-crime city and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are winter snow and ice, infrequent mountain buses, and bars without posted prices: ask before you sit.
