Nachikatsuura
那智勝浦町
One night for the Kumano Nachi Taisha shrine and the tuna market; a half-day stop if you are on the Kumano Kodo trail.
Nachikatsuura is a small coastal town in southern Wakayama, best known for the UNESCO-listed Kumano Nachi Taisha shrine and one of Japan's largest tuna markets. Most travellers use it as a one-night stop on the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route or as a day trip from Shingu or Kushimoto. The town is compact: the shrine, the market and a few onsen can be seen in half a day, but the area rewards a slow pace.
