Nabiac
Stop 1–2 hours for the National Motorcycle Museum, or sleep one night if driving the Pacific Highway; skip it as a destination on its own.
Nabiac is a small highway town of about 1,250 people on the Mid-North Coast of New South Wales, roughly 30 km south of Taree and 140 km north of Newcastle. Its one draw is the National Motorcycle Museum, which holds more than 800 bikes in a shed on Clarkson Street. Everything else is a bakery, a cafe and a pub stop between longer drives. Plan it as a break in a road trip, not a base.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- The Pacific Highway bypasses the town: take the Wallanbah Road exit northbound or the Nabiac St exit southbound to reach the shops.
- The museum is only open 10:00–15:00 daily; arrive before 14:00 to see it properly.
- Fuel and food options are limited after 15:30; plan the next stop at Taree or Coolongolook.
- Summer highway traffic and holiday weekends make the turnoffs slow.
Nabiac is a quiet highway town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are driving: fatigue on the Pacific Highway, kangaroos and wombats at dusk, and logging trucks on the back roads. Lock the car and keep valuables out of sight at rest stops.
