Nabadwip
নবদ্বীপ
Give Nabadwip one full day plus a night: temples and the Mahaprabhu sites in the morning, Mayapur across the river after lunch. Skip it if you want scenery over pilgrimage.
Nabadwip is a pilgrimage town on the Bhagirathi river in Nadia district, West Bengal, and the birthplace of the Vaishnava saint Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. It was a Sena dynasty capital and a centre of Sanskrit learning before the 13th century. Today it is a dense, working Bengali town of temple complexes, sweet shops and river ghats, paired with Mayapur on the opposite bank. One day covers the core; two days lets you add the river and Purbasthali.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Namaste (palms together) or a handshake between men; wait for a woman to offer her hand; avoid: Hugging or kissing strangers
- Hands and feet: Give and eat with the right hand; apologise if your foot touches someone; avoid: Pointing feet at people or shrines; touching books or food with your feet
- Temples: Shoes off, walk clockwise around shrines, accept prasad (blessed food) with the right hand; avoid: Leather in Jain temples; entering sanctums that say Hindus only
- Home visit: Bring sweets or fruit; accept tea at least once; avoid: Refusing all food; wearing shoes inside
- Questions: Expect personal questions (married? job? salary?) as friendliness; avoid: Taking offence; answer vaguely if you prefer
- Saying no: A firm, polite 'nahi, dhanyavaad' (no, thank you) and keep walking; avoid: Long explanations to touts
- Dress: Loose clothes covering shoulders and knees; kurta tops are cheap and cool; avoid: Swimwear or shorts away from Goa beaches
Scams and watch-outs
- Monsoon flooding and waterlogging in July–August; the Ganges has eroded riverbank land here before.
- Temple interiors often ban photography and shoes; some shrines are closed to non-Hindus — ask before entering.
- Rickshaw and toto drivers quote high to visitors: fix the price first.
- Few places take cards; carry small rupee notes for temples, rickshaws and sweets.
Nabadwip is a small pilgrim town and violent crime against visitors is rare; the real issues are monsoon flooding, crowded trains, rickshaw overcharging and heat in April–May. Women travelling alone should expect stares in the bazaars and dress modestly at temples.
