Myrtle Point
Stop for 2–3 hours on the Highway 42 run between Coos Bay and I-5, or sleep one night if you want the Coos County Fair or a slow river morning.
Myrtle Point is a small Coos County town at the south end of the Coquille River valley, about 25 mi (40 km) inland from Bandon. It is a preserved logging-era main street, a myrtle grove or two, and a county fair — not a destination you build a trip around. Come as a half-day on the way to or from the coast, or as a cheap one-night base if you are working the Coos County loop.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Cell coverage is patchy in the valley and along the river; download offline maps before you leave the coast.
- Many kitchens close by 20:00 and some close early or on odd days — call ahead or have a backup in Coquille or Bandon.
- Winter brings heavy rain and occasional flooding on low river roads; check Oregon road conditions before driving OR-42 in a storm.
- Fuel up in Coquille, Bandon or Coos Bay; stations in town are few and hours are limited.
A quiet small town; the real risks are wet winter roads, deer at dusk on OR-42, and river currents if you swim or float. Lock your car and keep valuables out of sight at trailheads.
