Murray Bridge
Pomberuk
Give Murray Bridge one night as a stop on the Adelaide–Melbourne run, or a day trip from Adelaide (76 km, about 1 h by car); two nights only if you want the river.
Murray Bridge is the population centre of the Murraylands, 76 km south-east of Adelaide on the Murray River, on Ngarrindjeri land known as Pomberuk. It is a working river town, not a resort: the draw is the river itself, the 1879 road bridge, a small gallery and museum, and easy access to the lower Murray. Most travellers pass through on the Adelaide–Melbourne route or visit as a day trip.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat: January and February regularly pass 35 °C; plan river and walking time for early morning.
- The Murray can be cold and fast after upstream rain; check conditions before swimming.
- Rural roads at dusk and dawn carry kangaroos and trucks.
- Fuel and food options thin out east of Tailem Bend; fill up in town.
A quiet, safe country town; the real risks are summer heat, wildlife on rural roads at dusk, and cold or fast river water after upstream rain. Standard 000 emergency number.
