Munster
Munster, Indiana
Skip as a base unless you have a reason to be in northwest Indiana: one half-day for Centennial Park and the veterans' memorial, then move on.
Munster is a small Lake County town of about 24,000 people, 30–40 minutes by car or South Shore Line from downtown Chicago. It has one real sight cluster (Centennial Park and the Community Veterans' Memorial), a theatre, and a handful of long-running local restaurants. Most travellers pass through on I-80/94 or use it as a cheaper bed near Chicago; there is no reason to plan a trip around it.

Get around
A car is the practical way to move around; the town is spread along Calumet Avenue and Ridge Road and sidewalks are limited outside the centre. Taxis and rideshare exist but are sparse — book ahead for early flights. The South Shore Line runs from nearby Hammond and East Chicago into Chicago; you still need a car or taxi to reach those stations.
See and do
Known for
- Centennial Park and its 9-hole golf course
- Community Veterans' Memorial
- The Center for the Visual and Performing Arts
- Local donut and gyro spots

- Ridge Road
- Town centre: restaurants, the performing-arts centre and Centennial Park within a short drive.
- Nearby Merrillville or Hammond
- More rooms and lower rates 10–20 min away; use Munster for the stop, not the bed, if Munster is full.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Distances look short on the map but the town is car-oriented; walking between sights is not realistic.
- Winter brings lake-effect snow and ice on I-80/94 and I-90 — build slack into airport runs.
- Toll roads (I-90, I-294) need cash, a card or an I-PASS/E-ZPass transponder; check your rental car's toll policy.
- Sales tax is added at the till; the price on the menu is not the price you pay.
Munster is a low-crime suburban town and feels calm day and night. The real risks are driving: I-80/94 traffic, winter ice, and toll gantries you cannot pay at the booth.
