Match the ticket to the number of trips, not to the length of your stay. Two rides a day is roughly the break-even point for a day ticket against singles; below that, buy singles. If you are in Munich for a single day and staying inside the inner rings, a day ticket for those rings is cheaper than a monthly pass.
The Deutschlandticket is a monthly subscription covering regional trains, S-Bahn, U-Bahn, tram and bus across Germany. It does not cover ICE, IC or EC trains. For a long weekend with a regional day trip — Neuschwanstein, Salzburg, Nuremberg — it can be the simplest answer, but only if the monthly price beats the day tickets you would otherwise buy, and only if you cancel before the deadline. How to pay
Ticket machines at U-Bahn and S-Bahn stations take cards and coins; many also have an English menu. Station ticket offices and MVG service centres sell the same fares and can issue the Deutschlandticket.
The MVG app and the DB Navigator app both sell single, day and monthly tickets; the QR code in the app is the ticket, so keep the phone charged. Contactless bank cards and phones are accepted on some readers and gates, but coverage is not universal — do not board assuming your card will work (check).
Paper tickets bought in advance from a machine or kiosk must be validated in the blue stamping boxes before you board. Tickets bought in the app are already active. Inspectors do check, and the penalty fare is around €60 (check).

From the airport
Munich Airport (MUC) is connected to the city by S-Bahn. The ride to the main station takes about 40 minutes; check which line suits your hotel, since the routes run via different sides of the city (check).
The airport is outside the inner rings, so a plain inner-ring day ticket will not cover the trip. Buy a wider day ticket, a single ticket that includes the airport rings, or use a Deutschlandticket, which covers the S-Bahn. A taxi or ride-hailing car from the airport to the centre costs far more than the train and takes longer in rush hour. If you land late, check the last connection for your line before you rely on the S-Bahn (check).

Tips
Validate paper tickets before boarding; unvalidated tickets count as no ticket. Keep the ticket until you leave the last vehicle of the journey (check).
The Deutschlandticket is a subscription. If you only need one month, cancel in the app before the cancellation deadline, which is usually the 10th of the month for the following month (check).
Regional trains are busy at weekends and on public holidays; bikes need a separate ticket and are not allowed on some services at peak times (check).
