Munich airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Munich Airport sits about 28 km northeast of the centre, next to the S-Bahn line that runs straight into the city. The S-Bahn is the default for almost everyone: two lines, one change-free ride to the main station, and a fare that a taxi cannot match.

The airport also has a bus link to Freising and a few long-distance coach services, but for the city centre the train wins on price and predictability. A taxi or rideshare makes sense only with a lot of luggage, a very early flight, or a group splitting the fare.

Two lines serve the airport, S1 and S8, and both end at Hauptbahnhof via the city tunnel. S8 is usually the quicker of the two, running through the eastern side; S1 loops through the west and can take a few minutes longer. Both stop at Marienplatz and other central stations, so check which line suits your hotel before boarding.

Trains run roughly every 10 minutes during the day and less often at night, with a gap of a few hours in the small hours when a night bus or taxi takes over. The ride is about 40–45 minutes to Hauptbahnhof.

Tickets: the airport is outside the inner zone, so a single journey to the centre costs more than a city ticket. A Deutschlandticket covers the whole trip at no extra cost, which makes it the cheapest option for anyone staying a few days. Buy from the blue MVV machines, the MVV app or a DB ticket machine; validate paper tickets before boarding.

Taxis wait outside the terminals and charge a metered fare to the centre, typically €90–110 depending on destination and traffic. The drive takes 35–50 minutes outside rush hour and longer on a weekday morning. Rideshare apps often quote less, so compare before you commit.

If you are hiring a car, pick it up at the airport and drive straight out; Munich's low-emission zone covers the middle ring, and any car you rent in Germany will normally carry the green sticker. Parking in the centre is expensive, so most visitors leave the car at the hotel or a Park-and-Ride and use the S-Bahn.

The S-Bahn single ticket is the cheapest sensible option and costs roughly the price of two coffees. If you are in Munich for several days and plan to use public transport, the Deutschlandticket pays for itself quickly and covers the airport run.

A taxi is around eight times the train fare. For a group of three or four with luggage, the gap narrows enough that a taxi can be reasonable, especially late at night when the S-Bahn is sparse.

Landing late? Check the last S-Bahn before you book a hotel; if you arrive after roughly 01:00, plan on a taxi or a night bus. If you land early, the first trains start around 04:00.

Buy your ticket before boarding. Munich has fare inspectors, and the on-board penalty is much higher than the fare. Paper tickets must be stamped in the blue machines on the platform.
