Maxvorstadt, Munich: neighborhood guide

Maxvorstadt is the district immediately north of the historic centre, built from 1825 under King Ludwig I, who pushed a neo-classical style on what he called an Athens of the North. Wartime bombing took most of the residential buildings in that style, but the museums and monuments around Königsplatz still carry it.

It is a university quarter: seven institutions, including LMU Munich and TUM, with more than 100,000 students. That shapes the day. Bookshops, cheap lunch places and study cafés fill the blocks between Königsplatz and the university, and the streets quieten early. Brecht, Kandinsky, Thomas Mann and Lenin are among the people who lived here.

The district runs roughly from the English Garden in the east to Lothstraße in the west, and from Georgenstraße in the north down to the main railway line and the Altstadtring. The sights cluster in a strip about one kilometre long between Königsplatz and the university, which is why walking beats changing U-Bahn lines.

Yes, if your Munich list is art, museums and the old town on foot. The Kunstareal museums are on the doorstep, Marienplatz is a 20–25 minute walk or two U-Bahn stops, and the Hauptbahnhof sits on the southern edge for day trips to the Alps and castles. Hotels here are mostly mid-range and business-oriented, with some budget options near the station.

No, if you came for beer gardens and late nights. The Englischer Garten and the big beer halls are a walk or a short ride away, and Maxvorstadt itself is quiet after dinner. Drivers should think twice: parking is scarce for non-residents, and the tramlines and one-way streets make the car a liability.

Pick your corner by purpose. Near Universität and Odeonsplatz for the museums and Altstadt; near Hauptbahnhof for trains and buses; near Stiglmaierplatz or Maillingerstraße for cheaper rooms and a tram up Dachauer Straße.

Food here follows the students. Expect bakeries, Turkish and Greek grills, Asian noodle places, falafel and pizza by the slice around Universität, Theresienstraße and Josephsplatz, with prices lower than in Altstadt. Lunch is the value meal; many kitchens shut by 21:00.

For a proper Bavarian meal, the beer halls and big traditional restaurants are in Altstadt and further out, not in Maxvorstadt. The museums around Königsplatz have cafés for a daytime break, and the area around the Hauptbahnhof has late-opening kebab and Asian places for arrivals.

Vegetarian and vegan options are common near the university. If you want a specific restaurant, check opening days: small places often close one weekday and on public holidays.

Hauptbahnhof, the main railway station, is at the southern edge of the district, so most arrivals pass through it. Long-distance buses use the ZOB next to Hackerbrücke S-Bahn station, also on the southern edge. S-Bahn lines S1 and S8 run from the airport along that southern edge, with stops at Donnersbergerbrücke, Hackerbrücke, Hauptbahnhof and Karlsplatz (Stachus).

U-Bahn lines cross the district north-south. U1 and U7 link Hauptbahnhof with Königsplatz, Stiglmaierplatz and Maillingerstraße. U2 and U8 run from Sendlinger Tor north through Hauptbahnhof, Königsplatz, Theresienstraße and Josephsplatz. U3 and U6 pass Odeonsplatz and Universität on their way north. All of Maxvorstadt is inside the inner city fare zone.

Trams 20, 21 and 29 run north from Hauptbahnhof up Dachauer Straße, and trams 27 and 28 run up Barer Straße past Karolinenplatz and the Kunstareal. For most trips inside the district, walk: a U-Bahn ride often means changing at Karlsplatz and coming back out. Cycling works well on the bike lanes, but keep your wheels out of the tram rails.
