Mungindi

Stop for one night if you are driving the Carnarvon Highway between Moree and St George; skip it as a destination on its own.

Mungindi is a small town of about 600 people on the Barwon River, sitting on the New South Wales–Queensland border. It is the only town in the Southern Hemisphere that keeps the same name on both sides of a state line. There is no taxi, no bus and no bank, so you need a car, fuel and cash before you arrive. Most travellers see it as a one-night break on the 120 km drive between Moree and St George, or as a look at the One Ton Post border marker.

Get around

You need your own car. There is no taxi and no local bus in Mungindi. The nearest car rental agencies are in Moree, St George and Goondiwindi, so hire before you arrive. The town itself is small enough to walk, but the One Ton Post and Neeworra are both a drive away.

  • No major bank in town and no 24-hour ATM: the nearest are in Moree, St George and Goondiwindi. Bring cash and use EFTPOS where you can.
  • The state border runs down the middle of the Barwon River and is not marked on the bridge. The NSW side moves to daylight saving from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April; Queensland stays on standard time all year. Check which clock a business is on.
  • Both police stations are not open 24 hours. The hospital emergency department is open 24 hours.
  • Fuel up when you can: the town has one petrol station, and the next stops are 120 km away.
  • Summer inland heat is the main health risk. Carry more water than you think you need.
